[Old General Record] Birdman flying from the bottom of the valley to the peak!
10:45pm, 23 September 2025【Basketball】
If you like the story of the little people's counterattack, then the name Chris Anderson is definitely worth remembering.
Anderson's childhood was not glorious. He did not have a responsible father. His mother worked hard to barely maintain the life of both mother and son. He experienced the orphanage early in life, and since childhood, he learned to survive in difficult environments.
For Anderson at that time, the most important thing was what to eat every day. As for those future plans, they were all extravagant talk, let alone basketball dreams.
Lack of professional guidance and formal training. When Anderson first tried to enter the NBA, he encountered a cruel real blow. After the teams in the league were selected, his name was not read.
Of course, the result of the failure was not surprising to him. He was too ordinary at that time. Even because of his lack of experience guidance, he forgot to submit his application to the league after publicly announcing his participation in the draft. After losing to the NBA, Anderson went to the CBA, IBL, and NBDL one after another, and then obtained a non-guaranteed contract with the Suns in the Summer League, but was laid off just one week later. It was not until 2001 that the Nuggets signed him as a free agent that Anderson's NBA dream was realized.
But even if he successfully entered the NBA, Anderson didn't have many opportunities. He was neither a shooter with stable shooting nor was he famous for his dribbling control. As a big inside man, he has almost no inside offensive steps; the only thing that can make him survive in the league is his extraordinary height and wingspan and extremely explosive bounce.
When I first arrived at the Nuggets, the team's main player Antonio McCurtis was absent due to a knee injury. The team's inside strength was not strong. The Nuggets' choice to sign Anderson was more like insured in advance for the injured. In this favorable environment, the birdman began to seize the opportunity gradually.
Return to the nickname "Birdman" many fans think it comes from his wing tattoo, but as early as the 2002-03 season, before his tattoos were covered with tattoos, Anderson had already won the love of fans with his bounce and fighting spirit, and the word "Birdman" began to be born in the fans' mouths. In the 2003-04 season, the Nuggets introduced Anthony and No. 1 pick Kenyon Martin. With fierce competition in the lineup, Anderson finally chose to sign a long-term contract with the New Orleans Hornets. After coming to the Hornets, their playing time, scores and rebounds all hit career highs, and gradually began to become the team's reliable defensive blue-collar worker.
But outside the court, Anderson off the court gradually began to face the test of life. In 2005, New Orleans encountered a natural disaster, Anderson's residence was destroyed, the mother-son relationship gradually became tense, and emotional setbacks also occurred, which led to Anderson gradually becoming addicted to alcohol and drugs. Under a series of blows, the big man was almost directly defeated.
On January 23, 2006, Anderson was disqualified from the league for failing to pass the drug test. This means that it will take two years to apply for recovery, and this move almost ruined his NBA career.
Perhaps it was this moment that the big man truly understood that everything he had worked hard to be completely destroyed so easily.
After leaving the NBA, Anderson, Birdman, completely awakened. He actively cooperated with drug tests and finally restored his player status in 2008. But at this time, the Hornets' lineup gradually became complete, and Anderson only left a record of 5 games. After weighing the trade-offs, he chose to accept the Nuggets' offer and put on the old blue jersey again.
Anderson, who returned to the Nuggets, has obviously become more mature in the game and is eager for every opportunity to play.
In the 2008-09 season, Anderson averaged only 20.6 minutes per game, but was able to send 2.5 blocks. If converted to 36 minutes, his blocking data will even surpass that of Howard, the blocking king of that year. With its bounce and passion, this former league abandoned son quickly became the most popular big guy among the Nuggets fans.
The subsequent experiences the Nuggets' Highlights and Downs, the Western Conference Finals with the Lakers in 2009 and the Anthony trade in 2011. No matter how the changes change, he is still the defensive gate that plays steadily every night. Even though his ability to bounce gradually declines as he grows older, his desire for basketball has never diminished.
In the 2011-12 season, the Nuggets began to pursue the younger roster, and Anderson became the only veteran who met the amnesty clause and was abandoned by the team. After leaving the Nuggets, the Birdman chose to join the Heat and eventually became one of the heroes to win the championship.
Just imagine, if it weren't for the Nuggets' insider's deep injury at that time, maybe Anderson wouldn't have had the chance to challenge the NBA at all; or if Anderson was in this era of zero tolerance, and seeing those players who were far away from the NBA due to failed drug tests, even if he later reflected on it, it would be hard to say whether the league would give him a chance to the small person.
Look at those teammates back then, some left the league because they lost the stage, and some people struggled their lives to win a championship. But for Anderson, who is loved by fans of both the Nuggets and the Heat and has a championship ring, this is undoubtedly a good enough career ending.
In addition to defense, Anderson is also keen on dunking, and participated in dunk competitions twice as the Nuggets and Hornets. But unfortunately, the first round was eliminated early in 2004; in 2005, he tried difficult moves again, but ended with low scores due to multiple failures and failed to leave his figure on the dunk stage.
Looking back at Anderson's early career, his greatest charm is not just Gao Fei's bounce or exaggerated look, but more importantly his serious and friendly personality.
With the enthusiasm to enter the NBA, from a silly boy who doesn't know how to apply for a draft in the league to an idol in the hearts of thousands of fans after retirement, the reason why Anderson was able to climb out of the bottom was due to his love for basketball.
Perhaps it is because it once fell deeper than anyone else, and after being reborn, it is more gorgeous than anyone else.
