On May 1, the NBA officially announced that Hawks player Daniels was elected the fastest-progress player of the year. He defeated Cunningham of the Pistons and Zubac of the Clippers to receive the award. Daniels is the second player in the history of the Hawks to win this award. In the 1997-98 season, Alan Henderson of the Hawks was elected the fastest-progress player.

Daniels scored 44 first votes, with a total score of 332 points, Zubac 186 points, and Cunningham 122 points. His first season in Atlanta is very different from his previous two NBA seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans. His data has improved significantly, with many data hitting career highs: he averaged 14.1 points per game (more than twice the 5.8 points last season), averaged 5.9 rebounds per game, averaged 4.4 assists per game, led the league in 3.0 steals per game, and also increased his shooting percentage from 43.5% in the previous two seasons to 49.3% this season. The Hawks established him as a full-time starter, a treatment he had never had before with the Pelicans.

The other two finalists have made quite progress. Cunningham jumped from 22.7 points to 26.1 points, his shooting percentage increased from 44.9% to 46.9%, his rebounds per game increased from 4.3 to 6.1, and his assists per game increased from 7.5 to 9.1. He led the Pistons to the bottom of the league with 14 wins and 68 losses last season to 44 wins and 38 losses this season successfully entered the playoffs.

Zubac ushered in his best performance in his nine-year career, averaging 16.8 points, 12.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He played in 80 games, hitting a career high, averaging nearly 33 minutes of playing time, and became one of the top defensive players in the league. Zubac, who teamed up with Harden, was nicknamed "Zuniel" by fans. Last season, Zubac's average of 11.7 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.

NBA has established the fastest-progress player award since the 1985-86 season, and no player has ever won the fastest-progress player award twice. The NBA announced the fastest-progress player award named after George McCann in a tribute to the first superstar in NBA history, who led the Lakers to win five championships in 6 years.
