Team News: Lyon is banned by FIFA from signing players in the next three transfer periods due to owing 2,000 euros

May 27th Lyon was banned from signing players by FIFA in the next three transfer periods. The "Team News" revealed that this was because Lyon did not pay the debt of only 2,000 euros in time.

FIFA announced on Monday that it would include Lyon Club on the penalty list for prohibiting registration as a new player, and Lyon will be banned from signing in the next three transfer periods. That is, the 2025 summer transfer period, the January 2026 winter transfer period, and the 2026 summer transfer period. FIFA rules say: "Once the registration ban is announced, the relevant clubs are not allowed to register new players in domestic and international competitions during the sanctions. Clubs can only register new players after FIFA fully fulfills the ban or lifts the ban."

And the "Team News" pointed out that this is only because of 2,000 euros in debt. This is a transfer fee balance that the club did not pay in time. FIFA issued a payment order to the club on April 9. However, Lyon did not pay the debt within the prescribed 45 days, so FIFA decided to impose penalties on Lyon.

On Monday night local time, the "Team" contacted the management of the club Lyon, and the other party assured that the amount had been paid after receiving the FIFA ban notice. "In the past few weeks, we have checked some internal processes and this issue is one of them. We have developed new administrative processes for the future." Lyon Club believes that this is just an oversight of internal management of the club, not intentional non-compliance with FIFA's money order.
