In the 2015 NBA Draft, Monterres Harrell, a junior insider from University of Louisville, was selected by the Houston Rockets in the 32nd place in the second round. Before the training camp in the new season began, the Houston Rockets announced that they had officially signed Monterres Harrell with a three-year, $3.14 million rookie contract. Since then, Monterres Harrell has started his NBA career. In the 2015-2016 season, Monterres Harrell, who was just a new member of the league, was not reused by the Rockets' coaching staff. He could only play as Dwight Howard's second substitute, and usually only played in games with the score. In the middle of the season, Monterres Harrell was even transferred to the Development League. In that season, Monterres Harrell played 39 regular season games for the Rockets, including one starter, averaging 9.7 minutes per game. The Rockets ranked eighth in the Western Conference with 41 wins and 41 losses, and lost to the Golden State Warriors 1-4 in the first round.
In the 2016-2017 season, Monterres Harrell played as a substitute for Clint Capela, and only started in the game where Clint Capela was absent. His average playing time and data were improved compared to last season. In that season, Monterres Harrell played 58 regular season games for the Rockets, including 14 starts, and averaged 9.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. The Rockets ranked third in the Western Conference with 55 wins and 27 losses. He defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 4-1 in the first round, lost to the San Antonio Spurs 2-4 in the Western Conference semi-finals and missed the Western Conference Finals.

On January 9, 2017, the Rockets challenged the Raptors away. Monterres Harrell played for 25 minutes in the whole game, made 12 of 13 shots, and made 4 of 6 free throws to contribute 28 points, 5 rebounds and 1 block, helping the Rockets defeat the Raptors 129-122. In this game, Monterres Harrell made all the first 12 shots, tying the Rockets' record in the history of the Rockets maintained by Yao Ming.
On June 29, 2017, the Houston Rockets transferred Monterres Harrell, Patrick Beverly, Louis Williams, Sam Decker, Kylevilch, DeAndrew Liggins, Darren Hilliard, the first round pick protected by the top three picks in 2018, and a $661,000 cash transaction to the Los Angeles Clippers, getting Chris Paul. In the 2017-2018 season, Monterres Harrell played as the team's first substitute in the interior and became the team's most important interior substitute. In that season, Monterres Harrell played 76 regular season games for the Clippers, including 3 starts, and averaged 11 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist in 17.1 minutes per game. The Clippers ranked tenth in the Western Conference with 42 wins and 40 losses, missing the playoffs.
On July 25, 2018, the Los Angeles Clippers announced that they would officially renew Monterres Harrell with a two-year, $12 million contract. In the 2018-2019 season, Monterres Harrell, due to the departure of Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan in the offseason, Monterres Harrell became one of the team's most important inside players. Although Monterres Harrell still plays as the team's substitute inside, he ranks fourth in the team's average score per game. This season, Monterres Harrell played 82 regular season games for the Clippers, including 5 starts, and averaged 16.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.3 blocks per game. The Clippers ranked eighth in the Western Conference with 48 wins and 34 losses, and lost to the Golden State Warriors 2-4 in the first round.

On April 16, 2019, in the second game of the first round of the Western Conference Playoffs, the Warriors played against the Clippers at home. 2019-2020 season, although Kawhi Leonard and Paul George joined the team in the offseason, Monterres Harrell's average playing time has increased compared to last season. His average score and rebounds averaged to a career-high. Monterres Harrell played 63 regular season games for the Clippers in 63 regular season games, including two starts, averaging 27.8 minutes per game, contributing 18.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 blocks. After the regular season, Monterres Harrell was elected as the sixth man of the season. The Clippers ranked second in the Western Conference with 49 wins and 23 losses, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 4-2 in the first round. The Western Conference semi-finals lost to the Denver Nuggets 3-4 in a 3-1 lead and missed the Western Conference Finals.

On November 21, 2020, the Los Angeles Lakers announced that they would sign Monterres Harrell on a two-year, $19 million contract, of which the second year is the player option.
2020-2021 season, Monterres Harrell played as the team's inside substitute. His average score was fourth in the team, becoming the team's number one scorer and rebounder on the bench. This season, Monterres Harrell played 69 regular season games for the Lakers, including one starter, and averaged 13.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. The Lakers ranked seventh in the Western Conference with 42 wins and 30 losses, and lost to the Phoenix Suns 2-4 in the first round..

On July 30, 2021, the Los Angeles Lakers traded Kyle Kuzma, Monterres Harrell, Kentavius Caldwell Pope, and the 2021 22nd sign to the Washington Wizards, and received Russell Westbrook, the 2024 second round pick, and the 2028 second round pick.
In the 2021-2022 season, Monterres Harrell still played as the team's interior substitute. His average score and rebound per game ranked first among substitutes. This season, Monterres Harrell played 46 regular season games for the Wizards, including 3 starts, and averaged 14.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. In the middle of the season, the Wizards management chose to trade Monterres Harrell. After coming to the Hornets, Monterres Harrell still plays as the team's interior substitute. This season, Monterres Harrell played 25 regular season games for the Hornets, all of which played as a substitute, averaging 11.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2 assists per 21 minutes. The Hornets ranked tenth in the Eastern Conference with 43 wins and 39 losses. In the first game of the playoffs, the Hornets lost to the Atlanta Hawks 103-132 and missed the playoffs. In the 2022-2023 season, Monterres Harrell played as Joel Embiid's substitute. His average playing time and data fell seriously compared to last season. In that season, Monterres Harrell played 57 regular season games for the 76ers, including 7 starts, and averaged 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. The 76ers ranked third in the Eastern Conference with 54 wins and 28 losses. He swept the Brooklyn Nets 4-0 in the first round, and lost to the Boston Celtics 3-4 in the Eastern Conference semi-finals and missed the Eastern Conference finals. Monterres Harrell during the 76ers' era On July 19, 2023, the Philadelphia 76ers announced that they would sign Monterres Harrell with a one-year, $2.7 million contract. On August 3, Monterres Harrell suffered injuries such as torn cruciate ligament of his right knee and meniscus torn. On October 24, the management of the Philadelphia 76ers announced that he had waived Monterres Harrell. Monterres Harrell, who became a free agent, did not receive the signing contract provided by the NBA team. Since then, he has switched to the NBL League, BIG3 League, and CBA League.
