Dembele: Enrique gave me full trust, last season was the best season of my career

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ottoman Dembele recently accepted an interview with the club's official TV station, reviewing the 2024/25 season with a brilliant record, and talking about the Club World Cup currently being held in the United States.

How do you feel when you return to the field after three weeks of absence?

"Very good! I suffered a minor injury while representing the French team in the National League. After examination, the doctor told me that it was not serious, so I took the time to recover fully. Actually, I could come back earlier, but I hope to return at my best, and it feels great now."

You made history with Paris last season. When you joined the team, did you ever think about going through such a moment?

"Yes, this is exactly what I want. I joined Paris Saint-Germain to experience such a moment. This year, both the team and I personally are amazing. It's all wonderful, but we are eager to win more, because after tasting this taste, you will want more!"

Last season, the best player in the Ligue 1 and the Golden Boot and the best player in the Champions League, and becoming the key gentleman of the team. How do you feel?

"These data are great, and they are the best performance in my career. It is even more special to be named the Champions League player, because this event brings together top players. When you are told you are the best, it feels incredible! I wanted to play a wonderful season, score more goals and assists, and I did it. The coach asked me to play center forward, which helped me a lot, and my teammates also supported me very much, but I think what really changed is the mentality, especially in front of the goal."

Your contribution to high-pressing and defense is also outstanding. Have you deliberately strengthened these aspects?

"Yes, especially the position and the intensity of pressing. You have to use your running to interfere with the opponent's defensive player or goalkeeper, and not give them time to think. If the opponent can take the ball calmly, the pressing will be in vain. Once the goalkeeper gets the ball, as long as I am nearby, he has to force him to handle it quickly, otherwise I will intercept the ball! Actually, I enjoy pressing. Every time the goalkeeper clears the ball with his feet, I will shout at him: 'Hey, you have good luck!' This is very interesting."

How to evaluate Coach Enrique's greater responsibility

"When he joined, he gave me full trust. He not only guided me on the court, but also gave me more freedom. He often said, 'I only asked you to do two or three things, but you can improvise when you have the ability.' I like this kind of free role, you can change positions left and right, and this way of playing makes me feel like a fish in water."

How did you take on the role of leader?

"It's good to keep your true colors. The coach at the beginning of the season asked me to set an example for young players, which is reflected in the field, whether it's pressing and defense, or offensive investment. In the locker room, I am still myself and I'm very happy to get along with my teammates, but I'm never sloppy when it's time to be serious."

Can you talk about the team's cohesion?

"We are like family, and spend more time together on the team than our family! This bond of relationships is becoming stronger. The cooperation of the past two years has allowed us to build trust with each other, and the results of this season are rewards. Everyone advises and supports each other, and this unity is crucial. We are always together regardless of winning or losing. The coach always emphasizes: 'We are a team and we must advance and retreat together.'"

Do you think this is the best season of your career?

"Yes, it's the best in data, and it's almost perfect in other aspects. Whether it's Ligue 1, the French Cup, or the Champions League, I have performed well in all three events. Although Dortmund and Barcelona also enjoyed it, winning the Champions League this season is undoubtedly the peak. Because it's too difficult to win the Champions League, when you have such a season and win the most important trophy, that feeling is unparalleled."

What do you think of the club World Cup in the new competition system?

"The game is very exciting and there are many upsets. We suffered a loss on Botavgo. If we don't do our best, we will lose. Other games such as Riyadh Crescent's performance against Manchester City and Fruminense is also surprising. South American teams are difficult to deal with, and I think there will be more upsets."
