Doncic shares strong message with new boss after Bass sells the Lakers for $10 billion
6:41pm, 20 June 2025【Basketball】
According to reports from Vishvisha Kumar, a contributor to US sports media F/W. Jenny Buss agreed to sell her majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers to billionaire Mark Walter, CEO of TWG Global and part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, ending one of the most iconic eras of ownership in sports history for a record $10 billion. While the move shocked many, Lakers superstar Doncic has fully embraced the change and sent a powerful message to the team's new boss.
"The Lakers are an amazing organization. I look forward to meeting Mark and being excited about the future. I also thank the Jenny and the Buss family for welcoming me to Los Angeles, and I am glad that Jenny will continue to be involved. I look forward to working with both of them to win the championship!" Luca's statement echoes the optimism within the Lakers. Despite the disappointing first-round exits last season’s playoffs, the combination of Luca Doncic and LeBron James has brought a dynamic duo to Los Angeles with a generation of talent.
Now, with the support of billionaires, they can actively pursue titles through transactions and investments in infrastructure. Mark Walter had purchased a 26% minority stake in Phil Anschutz in 2021, and he has a priority if the Bass family decides to sell it. This clause is currently under implementation. While Jenny will continue to serve as team director and retain a 15% stake to retain league governance, most ownership is now transferred to Walter.
Magic Johnson is ecstatic to have deep connections with the Lakers and Walter through his shared connection with the Lakers and Walter. He praised Walter as an indomitable winner who “will invest the resources needed to win” and compared him to Dr. Jerry Bath for his passion, business acumen and leadership style behind the scenes.
From Doncic's perspective, the message is clear, and he not only supports this change, but is motivated by it. Doncic has been seen as the core of the Lakers' future, and with the team's new financial firepower, fans can expect Los Angeles to become a top destination for free agents and disgruntled stars.
As ESPN's McMenaming noted, TWG Global's financial flexibility does not overtake the NBA's new labor agreement and its second luxury tax line. But Walter can invest resources in other important areas: scouting, analysis, player health and player development. In an era where marginal advantage separates competitors from pretenders, this may be where the Lakers have the advantage. The public support of Doncic, coupled with LeBron James' reported excitement about the change, suggests a united front. Although the majority ownership of the Bass family has ended, which dates back to the 1979 acquisition of the Lakers for $67.5 million, the Lakers seem ready to enter a new golden age.
With Doncic's helm and Walter's billions of dollars, the Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for another dynasty. What do you think?
